Alaska Any Way You Like It

TWO INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES

Alaska is one of our favorite places here at Modern Adventure. If you're not already in love the moment your float plane skims to a halt at Kukaklek Lake, you'll fall hard as you traverse its pristine peaks and meadows. All of our trips feature unparalleled access to the wildest national parks, seasoned guides, expedition-worthy camping gear and great backcountry cooking, but there isn’t just one Alaskan adventure out there — and we’ve crafted our trips to reflect the endless diversity of the "Great Land."

DENALI VS. KATMAI BACKCOUNTRY

There’s Alaska… and then there’s Denali, a six-million-acre wonderland in one of the most remote corners of North America. This trip isn’t for just any backpacker — it’s for those of us who really like a challenge. Here’s what’s in store.

THING TWO h4

We’ll hike the glaciers that encircle and offer stunning views of Denali — at over 20,000 feet, the highest mountain in North America. Our float plane will drop us at the base of Mount Church and Ruth Glacier, just 15 miles away from Denali’s towering peak, and we’ll spend our week together in its majestic shadow.

Glaciers cover about 16 percent of the total acreage of Denali and define its rugged terrain. The land between the Ruth and Tokositna glaciers is known as the “whale’s tale” due to its shape, and we’ll hike through its craggy terrain, carving our own trails over tundra and alongside the ice walls that sheer the valleys.

With a total vertical ascent of 3,700 feet, this trip is for those of us who like to push ourselves to scale new heights — literally. But our final day of backpacking will present the opposite challenge: 2,100 feet of elevation loss in one day. Descending from past glacial tundra and sheer ridgelines will be dizzying, enthralling, and knee-busting — like returning to earth from outer space.

DEEP BACKCOUNTRY TRIP

We named this trip our deep backcountry adventure, but it could just as easily be called our bear adventure. Here’s how we’ll (safely) commune with them.

Katmai National Park is famed for its wild brown bears, and we’ll spend two days here admiring them from afar. Then it’s on to the Spectacle Lake region, prime grizzly country, where each stream pulses with salmon making their last upstream push to nest and lay eggs — if the grizzlies don’t get them first.

These pristine salmon-rich waters are home to other glorious wildlife too; as we try our hand at a little trout fishing, we’ll be on the lookout for herds of caribou and soaring bald eagles too.

For Days 1 thru 5, we’ll camp in the backcountry. We provide expedition-quality tents and trekking poles, along with group-size tarp shelters and all the gear we need to camp safe and comfortable—plus an array of portable cookery for camp-kitchen feasts of seriously delicious cuisine (from reindeer rotini to Shanghai noodles).

We’ll end our journey at the Farm Lodge’s lakeside cabins at Port Alsworth in Lake Clark National Park. Bigger than Connecticut (and a national park only since 1980), Lake Clark sees just a few thousand visitors a year. We’ll rest, relax and paddle in the paradise of the lake.
