Twilight descends over your farm-to-table feast as the strains of music float by and roasted chiles tinge the air. You take a sip of mezcal and savor its floral, earthy notes as all your senses quiver with the sights, sounds, and flavors of Oaxaca. The past week has been more than a travel adventure — it’s been pure exhilaration, a reminder of all the joy that life can hold. You’ve bonded with fourth-generation mezcaleros, dined on homemade mole with a master potter and experienced cleansing rituals at the hands of a traditional Zapotec shaman. After this week long adventure, you’re smitten for life—and it’s only a matter of time before you’ll return.
Along with us are chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres, the culinary masterminds behind San Antonio’s Mixtli—it means ‘cloud’ in Nahuatl—with a rotating menu that highlights each of Mexico’s 32 states. They’ve dedicated themselves to researching the flavors of Mexico. Whether that’s pulling from 15th-century manuscripts, or from Diego’s grandma’s hundred-year-old culinary school notebook, the duo are food scholars with a passion for indigenous ingredients and pre-Hispanic cooking techniques. This is no mere vacation in Mexico—it’s a six-day discovery of one of the world’s most delicious destinations. It’s also Rico and Diego’s second Modern Adventure; our first trip with them to Yucatán was simply incredible. We are deeply honored to explore and celebrate the beauty of Mexico once again with Rico and Diego.
If you travel to stimulate all of your senses, this trip is for you. Wander colorful markets, taste incredible street food from moles to tlayudas, then wash it all down with the finest artisanal mezcals. All the while, connect with shamans, weavers, artists and chefs. This is Mexico like you’ve never imagined.

3 Reasons to Travel with Diego and Rico
Rico Torres and Diego Galicia first met at a restaurant pop-up and quickly bonded over their Mexican roots. Fueled by a desire to share Mexico’s regional flavors, they opened San Antonio's Mixtli—it means 'cloud' in Nahuatl—with a rotating menu that highlights each of Mexico's 32 states. It's a delicious adventure steeped in regional flavors and ancient techniques, always with the mission to: “Rescue. Preserve. Protect. Promote.”

Because They Are Amazing
Diego and Rico cook with passion and are true gracious hosts. We know, because this is their second Modern Adventure. Last year we explored the Yucatán with these amazing humans. The experience was incredible.
Culinary Scholars
Rico and Diego study ancient Mexican cookbooks (in a secure vault at the University of San Antonio!) and travel extensively throughout Mexico to learn the nuanced ingredients and techniques of each region.
Connection Matters
For Rico and Diego, food connects them equally with the people they love, and with the millennia of culture and history that underpin modern Mexico.
Your Experience

“Oaxaca is its own microcosmos of food and culture not seen anywhere else in Mexico.”
Oaxaca City, Monte Albán

“Aside from being a pillar of Mexican gastronomy, Oaxaca is also rich in artisanal culture, folklore, and heritage.”
Where We Sleep

A peaceful oasis in Oaxaca City—our accommodations are small-scale and boutique, the ideal ways to get acquainted with Oaxaca life.
El Callejón
Oaxaca CityOff a central side street, a few blocks from the zocalo and central shops and eateries, a street gate opens into a breathtaking oasis that’s our Oaxaca City home: a boutique hotel with a dozen spacious rooms blending the city’s distinctive styles. Serenity reigns in its thoughtful garden spaces, with palm trees, covered walkways and an outdoor patio bar.

I loved eating goat just after it was lifted from the pit, sipping on a mezcal.
This is more than just a trip. It’s authentic and joyful, and a powerful reminder of why we travel.
The meals made for us in local homes were just heavenly.

Do I need Travel Insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement for your trip costs; if your trip plans change for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to get medical help, emergency transport, and for theft, loss or damage of items while traveling. For best coverage, always insure the full trip cost within two weeks of your initial trip deposit and note that most ‘Cancel For Any Reason’ policies must be purchased on the date of your initial deposit.
-
What is the cancellation policy?
You may cancel on or before January 21, 2023, and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel on or after January 22, 2023, there is a 50% cancellation fee. On or after March 22, 2023 there is a 100% cancellation fee. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or cases of the trip being canceled (see our Terms and Conditions for full details).
